I just mentioned sunscreen, but there’s more to UV protection than just slathering on the lotion. A rash vest offers excellent coverage for your torso if you’re prone to burning or spending extended periods in the water.

Sunglasses with UV protection are important for shielding your eyes from harmful rays. Did you know you can get a sunburn on your eyes? Yep, you can – and it hurts quite a lot, as you can imagine.

Oh, and don’t forget the impact a wide-brimmed hat can have.

Hydration heroes

You’ve got to stay hydrated on a hot beach day. While water is the best thing to carry with you and drink, consider supplementing your intake with electrolyte-packed drinks to replenish essential minerals lost through sweat. 

Do you know how much you can sweat on a hot day? We’re talking several litres – potentially per hour! Of course, it depends on several factors, but it’s probably more than you thought. So, getting enough fluid in is important. 

Reusable water bottles are an eco-friendly pick (especially insulating ones), and for an extra cooling boost, pack a small spray bottle filled with water. A quick spritz can offer instant relief from the heat.

Comfort boosters

A fan can be a lifesaver –whether it’s battery-powered or a classic foldable hand fan. Cooling towels are another excellent option. Simply soak them in water, wring them out, and wrap them around your neck or forehead. Same principle as the little spray bottle. They are perfect to stow away in something like Tupperware, so you can prepare them before you leave the house or hotel!

If you prefer a more luxurious beach experience, an inflatable cushion can transform your spot on the sand into a comfortable oasis.

Beach beauty and hygiene

Want to keep feeling fresh out there? Waterproof makeup can withstand the elements, just like sunscreen-friendly skincare products – so you can do a little top-up whenever you feel like it. Noticed a few stray hairs that you forgot in the shower earlier? A tiny, discreet hair removal product is another handy addition to fix this in seconds. 

A little first-aid kit can go a long way, too. Plasters, disinfection spray and some basic painkillers might just make the difference in an emergency.

Entertainment and relaxation

To make the most of your beach time, pack some items that’ll keep you entertained for a while. A waterproof speaker allows you to enjoy your favourite tunes (but keep in mind that you’re not alone!) and a book or e-reader are the obvious picks. 

But interactive, portable games like a simple deck of cards or beach-friendly board games can also be a fun way to pass the time. And nothing is more fun than some goggles and a snorkel, no matter your age.
