If you’ve never been before, you’re likely to feel a little over faced by the sheer possibility posed by this subcontinental swathe. There are so many states within India, each of which has its own incredible draws and makes picking your next holiday destination all the harder.
Here, we acknowledge this difficulty, and aim to make things easier by picking out the best places in India to visit – not just by place, but also by season! After all, countries change throughout the year, and some places really come into their own at a specific time of year – to say nothing of our own changing holiday habits! Where, then, should you consider visiting during each of the four seasons?
Winter - December to February
India is a vibrant, multifarious country in the wintertime, with thanks to its various biomes – from sunny-warm beaches to brisk mountain peaks. If you’ve ambitions to travel during the wintertime for winter-y things, like skiing or mountaineering besides, you might consider visiting Himachal Pradesh – India’s most northerly state, and one which benefits from the majesty of the Himalayas. For a temperate opportunity to enjoy India’s warmer climes, consider Goa for an anachronistic beach holiday.
Spring - March to May
Spring is a time of bloom and regeneration for every country, and India is of course no different – even, perhaps, the platonic ideal destination for a Spring break on account of its rich flora and astounding fauna. This weather is ideal for a river cruise in India, particularly if you’re amenable to enjoying the storied banks of the Hoogly (and the many historic temples that line it). Alternatively, you could visit West Bengal and see the best of India’s tea gardens.
Monsoon Season - June to September
Monsoon season is something that cannot truly be understood until it is experienced in person. This hot, wet, changeable period is as dramatic as it is beautiful, particularly in India. To see the most dramatic of this weather, visit Meghalaya – the state which has not one but two of India’s rainiest cities within its bounds. This rain makes for some stunning waterfalls, from the majesty of Nohkalikai Falls to the quiet thrill of Seven Sisters.
Autumn - October to November
Autumn is an easy season to overlook for holidaymaking, being a very different season of change; however, a lot of India’s cultural highlights take place in the months of Autumn, including Diwali. Being the festival of lights, it’s only fitting that you visit the City of Lights during it; Varanasi is a spiritual must-visit year round, but especially magical during Diwali.
