Courses and training needed for launching a beauty business

Are you planning on launching a beauty business? Whether you’re going solo or you want to set up a fully-fledged salon, there are some key considerations you’ll need to make before you book any clients.

One of the main starting points is ensuring all the qualifications and training you need are in place. To help you, here are some of the top courses to look into, along with the training you’ll need to offer specific services.

Plan ahead

This is a busy, popular industry and if you want to join, it’s important that you have the skills and training in place so that you can offer the highest levels of service.

Begin by planning out what you need. You can get basic training in beauty therapy at college or through an apprenticeship. There are NVQs that run from levels 1 to 4 and BTECs in areas such as Beauty Therapy Sciences. These are available if you want to be a hair stylist or a beautician.

If you decide to get some formal qualifications in place first, take the time to look into what’s available in your area.

Specialist training

If you already have the basics in place, you might want to specialise in one area or train in several treatments so that you can expand your offering.

Here’s an overview of the training involved for the areas you might want to focus on:

Nails

Whether you want to offer acrylics and gels or all-out nail art, there are lots of training options available if you want to provide nail services. Some are one-day courses, others take a little longer and you may be able to choose between training in-store or online.

It’s worth taking the time to build up your nail art skillset. You could find that from there, you can provide a mobile service for clients or specialise in one particular client base, such as bridal nails.

Tanning

There are different ways to master fake tan applications. Spray tanning courses are very popular so building up your experience in this could open the door to more clients.

Training in this can take a day and it typically requires a practical element, which is why most of these courses are in-person. You’ll learn about the products to use and the best application techniques, plus trained educators will talk you through the equipment you need and how to care for it.

Massage

The massage training course you choose will depend on what you want to specialise in first. Would you like to start with facials or offer full body treatments? As well as learning the basics, you could branch out into learning hot stone techniques, for example.

If you want to offer massage as your main treatment option, it’s worth looking into getting trained in all the key areas so you can provide high-quality treatments.

Waxing

Waxing is another popular treatment option and one service that you might want to provide. There are courses available that take you through how to wax legs, however there are often separate courses for waxing intimate areas as this requires a certain level of care.

You’ll learn how to apply the wax, basic health, safety and hygiene practices, and how to position your client.

Take the time to decide what you want to specialise in and explore the training options available to you.
