It's bizarre that I always feel a little strange writing about periods or any of the body's natural processes. But why is that for goodness sake it is 2024 and if you are a woman you too will have periods and will know what I mean. I think growing up we were taught to hide the fact that our bodies go through a menstrual cycle. God don't let the men know the women have this right? Well, the world is changing thank god and guess what we go through this and to be completely honest it is bloody awful a lot of the time and not being able to talk about the fact that we are in pain uncomfortable and the unrealistic expectations of what a period should look like is just exhausting.
I could write a list of the things I never spoke about to anyone about my periods and this led to me thinking things were normal when they weren't. A trip to the doctor later to find out I was very ill. My doctor had never seen someone so anaemic before. My iron levels were the lowest he had seen in his career. But god forbid I talked to someone about what was going on. I thank god young women can be more open about the rollercoaster that is our monthly friends or foe.
With the change in openness and awareness around periods has given the sanitary market space and time to grow and develop some amazing products. Enter WUKA into my life.
Who is WUKA?
WUKA stands for Wake Up Kick Ass and was developed by Rudy Raut in 2017. She wanted to empower women and saw it as a right for everyone to have access to quility sustainable period products that break the stigma around periods.
WUKA make reusable leakproof period underwear. This eliminates the need for single-use pads and tampons and also helps to eliminate period poverty. I remember when I first left home I would have to budget really carefully to be able to afford my pads. Yes, they are that expensive when on a very tight budget. Did I mention they are the brand that made all-period pants vat-free in the UK? Yes, that was them. They are making their mark for sure and we thank you for it.
WUKA have a wide range of products from period pants to swimwear they really have you covered no matter what you get up to with your period. They offer a wide size range from XXS to 6XL and have a range of absorbencies.
Review of WUKA
I have two sets of WUKA period-proof underwear to talk about today I have the brand new just launched Midi brief stretch cotton underwear and the WUKA ultimate midi brief medium flow. I am going to tell you my thoughts on both of these. But first I need to take a minute For the gorgeous packaging that they arrived in. I think not enough companies put thought into their packaging anymore.
Let's start with the new WUKA Strech Cotton pants. I have these in a size XS I am a UK 6 but I always buy a size up in pants. But WUKA stretch cotton fits XS to L as they are very stretchy. It says it fits a UK 6 to 14. This is a design I have never seen before and I love it. No more ordering the wrong size as these are so flexible.
They are so soft and comfortable to wear they feel like normal pants if I am honest and this is probably the best compliment I can give them. You forget you are wearing them. A big plus for me is that they are not in any way bulky. This was something I was worried about but they are really thin and look just like normal pants under your clothing. They are breathable and not hot to wear they are quite a high cut on me but I like that during that time of the month it makes me feel more secure.
I have worn them to work out and they stay in place no matter what I am doing I feel comfortable and secure with no worry at all no matter what I wear to the gym.
