Staying hydrated: essential tips for hot summer days

As the temperature rises during the summer months, it's important to stay hydrated to keep your body functioning properly and keep you feeling your best. But getting enough water in isn’t always as easy as it seems—distractions, different priorities, and hyperfocus can all play a part in lower water intake. Even if staying hydrated is a priority, remembering to top up that water bottle can be a struggle. However, there are a few tips that can make staying hydrated easy.

Whether you’re inside under the aircon, or making the most of the warm days outside, here are a few hydration tips to help you beat the heat.

Chill out: Refreshing frozen treats to beat the heat

Nothing beats a delicious, frozen treat when the sun is at its peak. Not only will it help cool you down, but making these icy popsicles will also satisfy your sweet tooth!

Fruit popsicles made with fruit juice are easy to create at home and are a healthy alternative to traditional ice cream. Not to mention are a hit with the kids! Likewise, yoghurt freezes well for a creamier homemade frozen treat that’s a little closer to that ice-cream consistency.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, why not craft a slushy made with fresh frozen fruit? Simply add your favourite frozen fruit to a blender (watermelon is delicious!) and crush away!

Summer sippers: Fun and refreshing drinks

If you’re bored of plain water, why not try some fun and refreshing drinks that can be made at home. Some of the best drinks for summer include iced tea, lemonade, and fruit-infused water (or for those after-midday drinks, mojitos and frozen margaritas!)—many of these can be made with natural ingredients for a delicious and hydrating drink.

Load your summer refreshers up with ice and batch create these beauties for a thirst quenching treat at any time of day. It’s a sure-fire (and more interesting) way to keep up that fluid intake!

Always keep water and accessories on hand

Insulated cups are a great way to keep your beverages cold and close at hand. With the old adage being ‘out of sight, out of mind’, then surely keeping your drink on standby is sure to help!

Whether it’s keeping your bottle or cup at your desk and getting up to refill every hour or so, or perhaps you’d prefer to throw it in your bag to take with you on the school run or commuting around town—at least you know your drink will be at the perfect temperature and always within reach.

And if you’re heading to the beach or basking in the sun—remember to bring shade (hats and umbrellas are perfect for this) and always use sunscreen to protect your skin.

Stick to the shade

It’s no secret that being in direct sun can quickly dehydrate you, especially during peak times. Finding shade isn’t always easy, so carrying a sun umbrella with you is always a good idea for those beach trips or picnics in the park.

If you know you’re going to be outside between the peak UV hours of 12-3pm, it’s wise to plan where the shade may be. This is when the sun is most harsh, so it’s important to plan ahead and keep yourself nice and cool where possible!

Other tips for staying cool would be to wear lightweight and breathable clothing, use a portable fan or misting fan, drink plenty of water, and take breaks in shaded areas or inside.

Sneaky ways to boost fluid intake

Staying hydrated is important for your overall health, but sometimes it can be difficult to drink enough fluids throughout the day. Whether it’s the kids needing your attention, running around to do errands, or you’re just not focusing on hydration, it’s easy to forget to drink up!

Do you enjoy sweet fruits? You may like infused water, which includes adding fruits or herbs to your bottle and allowing the flavours to flow into the water. This is a quick and effective way to make drinking water that little bit more enjoyable.

Keep forgetting to fill up your bottle? Setting reminders or alarms is a great way to overcome this, as you no longer have to rely on your memory to keep up those fluids. This means you can use your brain power for those more pressing things! Or if tea is more your style, adding some herbal teas to your water and popping it in the fridge means you have iced tea on hand. And with so many different flavours, you’ll never get bored when trying to get your water intake up!

Summer is an amazing time to kick back, relax and enjoy the warmth and some Vitamin D. Hopefully with these tips, you’ll be able to stay cool and hydrated in the summer months while enjoying your time in the sun.
