6 Natural Ways to Maintain Beautiful Skin

Hi everyone,

There may not be a fountain of youth where we can bathe our skin in on a monthly basis, but the food we eat and products we use all have an effect on the state of our skin. Your body needs nutrients to fight off damage and vitamins to reproduce cells. It’s not just our mental health and stress levels which benefit from fruit, veggies and a good night’s sleep, but our physical appearance too! Here are my top ways to give your skin a boost, without putting any nasty chemicals onto it.

Stay hydrated

Being just a little bit dehydrated causes your body to not work at its optimum level, and when your body needs water, your skin will be dull, loose and flakey. The recommended amount of water per day is 3.7 litres, but if you exercise frequently or live at altitude or somewhere hot, you will probably need to consume more.

Limit sun exposure

Small amounts of exposure to sunlight are good for your skin, and vitamin D is good for our wellbeing, but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Overexposure to the sun can cause irreparable damage to your skin and can be the culprit of scarring, premature ageing and sun spots. If you must be in the sun for long periods of time, don’t forget to use a high SPF sunscreen and to wear a hat.

Use natural skin products

Many skin care products contain harsh chemicals which dry out and irritate your skin. By choosing organic skin care, you are choosing to cover your skin in nature’s best gifts. Be sure to check the packaging for a list of ingredients to be sure that what you are buying is good for you first.

Consume antioxidants

Antioxidants are the best chance we can give our body for fighting off infection, disease, and ageing. These foods all work to decrease inflammation and wrinkles, meaning that it really is true when they say you are what you eat. Some of the best sources of antioxidants are:
  • Acai berries
  • Blueberries
  • Pomegranate
  • Spinach
  • Raspberries
  • Goji berries
  • Organic green tea
  • Dark chocolate
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Purple grapes

It is also important to remember that your body and skin need a full range of nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants to stay healthy, so when you are thinking about your meals, choose foods which are bright in colors rather than just beige!

Sleep

Your skin rejuvenates and repairs at night when you are sound asleep. If you are tired and unrested, you will likely have dark circles around your eyes and your skin will look as dull and tired as you feel! Where possible, try and get in a full eight hours of snoozing a night.

Exercise often

Exercising isn’t only good for your fitness and health, but your skin too. By exercising and sweating, more oxygen circulates, and antioxidants make their way through your pores and onto your skin, which makes it both clearer and firmer.
